02. Insured or in need of insurance, that is the question?
- Check your existing coverage: Before purchasing specific ski insurance, review your current insurance policies (home, health, personal accident) and the coverage provided by your credit card. These may already include protections for ski accidents, but check for exclusions, especially for off-piste skiing.
- Are mountain rescues free or paid? On ski areas, rescues are paid services with fees set by the resorts. Costs can be significant, especially for helicopter interventions (~€1600).
- Ski insurance options: Insurances offered with ski passes (such as Carré Neige) usually cover without upfront payment slope rescues, repatriation, medical expenses, and refunds for unused passes or lessons. Sports federations and some credit cards also provide options, though often limited to purchases made with these cards. Contact insurers directly for personalized advice.
- Beware of exclusions: Insurance policies may exclude accidents resulting from prohibited practices (closed slopes, announced dangers) or outside the slopes' operating hours. Carefully review the terms to avoid unpleasant surprises.
