Born from the richness of the Haute-Tarentaise territory, local products and know-how tell, above all, a story of the mountains. Until the middle of the 20th century, the agro pastoral system was adapted to the difficult conditions of the mountains: exploitation of mountain pastures, dairy farming for the production of different cheeses (Beaufort “Prince des Gruyères”, Tomme, etc.). In each village, there was a great diversity of craft activities of which many testimonies remain.
From Aime to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the apple has been part of local history, complementing the pastoral economy.
A providential, rustic fruit, the apple was used to make cider, to prepare sweet and savory dishes as well as to feed pigs. Reinettes and Franc-Roseau were even exported. This arboriculture thus ensured a varied production eleven months out of twelve. The Maison de la Pomme in la Chal, near Bourg-Saint-Maurice, will allow you to learn about this invaluable heritage and to inform you about the large conservation orchard project currently being developed in the Tarentaise Valley.

A path punctuated with explanatory panels will allow you to explore the Ballastière orchards and the history of the fruit-growing civilisation which marked the Tarentaise valley while drawing attention to the remarkable ecosystem of its traditional orchards. Numerous rest areas are there to allow you to enjoy the landscapes and taste this vast space, dedicated to the rebirth of the orchards.
